I hope the summer is treating you well so far. I’m sure it’s been a busy one for all! Your Board members have been busy, too. Here’s a quick rundown of the happenings at Northwestern Hockey.
In case you’re interested, most of what I’ve written about below has already been announced on Facebook and Twitter. If you want to be the first to know or you want to join in on the conversation, visit the following:

Changes for the Upcoming Season
For the 2014-15 season, we have contracted with IPH Hockey to conduct a series of high-intensity clinics for all of our travel players. The clinics will be run from September to early December and will be held in addition to the regularly scheduled team practices. We think this is a great way to get the season started and will set our players up perfectly for a full year of development.
In addition, we will continue our goalie development program that was started 2 years ago and expanded last year. A series of 6 goalie clinics will be run throughout the season by ProCrease, the premier goalie instruction organization in the state.
We also expect to begin our season the week of September 22nd. Both of our home rinks will be opening up early this year. Canterbury will be opening up then and the Gunnery will be opening up around October 1. So, we do not expect to hold any “pre-season” practices in Danbury this year, except for our Midget team whose season begins around September 1.
For our final change this season, we will be adding names to the back of our travel jerseys. Thank you to Tiffany Delmonico for moving that forward.
Our second annual Skate-A-Thon, will be held on Sunday, August 31 from 3pm to 5pm at the Danbury Ice Arena. Our “Skate for Autism” will feature lots of great prizes and non-stop giveaways through the entire 2 hour skate. This is s great even to start the season and get teammates back on the ice together. Some call it “Team Building”. I call it “Fun Building”. Watch your inbox for more information.
For the first time, we decided to run a summer skills and skating clinic series. The clinics started in June and will continue through the end of August. Despite the various vacations, we have had great attendance at these clinics and there have been a lot of red faces and sweaty heads coming off the ice! Thank you to our new coaching director, Matt Delmonico, and all of the dedicated coaches who have run some fast-paced, tight clinics this summer. The next clinic is this Thursday, July 25 and the remaining ones are on August 8 and August 22.
For those that don’t know, membership on the Northwestern Hockey Board is completely voluntary and unpaid. In the past few months, we have had a few dedicated individuals step down while others have stepped forward to give of their time. We welcome Matt Delmonico as coaching director, Matt DeSmith as CHC Representative, and Lee Fader as equipment manager. In addition, Tiffany Delmonico has stepped into the role of Vice President. Thank you to Bill Mayers, Rob Paltauf, Bryan Davis, and Dave Zona for your years of dedicated volunteer service.
In Season Tournament
All travel teams (mites through bantams) will be attending the Jingle Bell Skate in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The tournament will be held from December 30 through January 1. If past history holds true, I suspect there will be a very fun New Year’s Eve gathering in the middle of everything! More details about the exact timing and hotel information will be sent around as we get closer.
New Milford Village Fair Days
Northwestern Hockey will, once again, be represented at the Village Fair Days this Friday and Saturday (7/25 and 7/26). Feel free to stop by and say hello, but more importantly, encourage your friends (who have young children) to stop by! We will have some fun activities and special giveaways!
In House Programs
Registration for our In House Programs is now open. This includes Intro to Hockey, the Mite Cross Ice League, Learn to Skate, and Limited Travel.
